The Other: Representations of Violence and Racism in 20th-21st century Latin American Culture in Film and Literature.: Calls for Papers

In Latin American literature there has traditionally existed a strong relationship with the foundational aspects of the nation-state. In late 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, cultural production that explores racism and the themes of the other and otherness, positions these aspects in direct contradiction and questioning of the concept of nation as a static and homogeneous entity. In this continuum, works emerge that explore racial violence and genocide, approaching otherness and challenging normative perspectives in terms of gender and sexual orientation. Consequently, we undertake as an objective of this panel to study the intersection of these themes as represented in particular examples of literature and film that explode foundational myths. The novel Blanco Nocturno (22010), by Ricardo Piglia, constructs a dramatic scenario in which a Puerto Rican man of African descent travels from New Jersey to a town in the province of Buenos Aires, where he is murdered some weeks later. In the detective-genre style of Piglia, the murder of a black Latino who arrives in a town that considers itself white, functions as a metaphor of the nation that sees itself threatened by a minority of people of color. The plot, in addition, utilizes the theme of the double, and of homophobia as a motive for a Gaucho-style homicide, in which dominant masculinity absorbs the body of the other. In Venezuela, through various recent Venezuelan cultural objects, we are witnesses to subjects impacted by the circumstances of the ailing body that has governed the country since the diagnosis and death of Hugo Chávez. The film, Pelo malo (2013), is an eloquent case: It depicts the relationship between a mother and son in the great human project known as “January 23” and its surroundings, while in the loneliness of their apartment a TV set that is always on shows the demonstrations by people who grieve for Chávez’s illness. An earlier work, the poem “La isla en peso,” (1943) by Virgilio Piñero, describes Cuba as “la bestia,” a body that struggles against the confinement of its own form. Piñera’s poem explores the tension between poetic subject, nation and island through the erotic to suggest the sensorial and affective force of bodies as the basis for a Cuban identity that sheds fossilized religious or historical narratives. We find that in the current climate of anti-immigrant fervor in the US and Europe, especially in regard to African and Latin American immigrants, and their position within African American and Latino populations of the US, makes scholarly studies such as ours extremely relevant. Conceptualizations of the subject in terms of body and affect in the global sociopolitical stage permeate Latin American literary discourse today, and it is our hope to advance the discussion in the overlapping US-Latin American academic field.

Our panel will consist of three 18-minute presentations, to be presided by one of the speakers, and moderated to allow a full 15 minutes for discussion.
