This special session seeks to present, nearly fifty years after publication of Another Roadside Attraction, a reappraisal of Tom Robbins's literary art and philosophic point of view. Each of the session's papers, as their titles indicate, proposes to reveal what is latent and sophisticated in Robbins's novels and shorter works, especially as those publications and their ideas relate to the conference's theme regarding the human condition. Robbins lives in La Conner, Washington, so I believe he may be convinced to attend the session as a guest and potential (unofficial) respondent. He has been publishing novels for the last half century, and the last time I communicated with him, he indicated he was already engaged in a new literary effort, which he would be happy to share information about with session attendees. So it would seem it is an appropriate time to extend an invitation to him as a way of recognizing his impressive contribution to American letters in the last century and in the first decades of the present one. The session promises to advance scholarship regarding Robbins's works since all speakers have been advancing criticism of Robbins's works through their previous scholarship. Each paper will be limited to twenty minutes, which will permit a few words by Robbins himself and questions from the audience.
