601 Spring and All at One Hundred Meets “The Academy in Peril” at Forty: Calls for Papers

Saturday, 7 January 2023: 5:15 PM-6:30 PM
3022 (Moscone West)
A celebration and critical assessment at the 100th anniversary of the publication of William Carlos Williams’s Spring and All—among the most significant modernist avant-garde texts. The session, at the same time, is organized around the 40th anniversary of one of the panelists, Charles Bernstein’s, provocative challenge on the 100th anniversary of Williams’s birthday, “The Academy in Peril: William Carlos Williams Meets the MLA,” that was presented at the "Poets' Centennial Tribute to William Carlos Williams" during the 1983 Modern Language Association convention in New York.

Each poet/critic will present for 15 minutes and the remainder of the time will be dedicated to questions and exchange among the panelists.

The scholarship on Williams and Spring and All is robust and ongoing. Bernstein’s essay was published in Sulfur No. 10 (Pasadena: 1984) and we hope to publish the presentations of the 2023 MLA panel in the William Carlos Williams Review.
