Guaranteed session for both the Forum on the Teaching of Literature and the Committee on Digital Humanities Please note that collaborative proposals are NEVER guaranteed and the session organizers were told this (Karin Bagnall).

The MLA Executive Committee on Digital Humanities and the Forum on the Teaching of Literature are co-sponsoring the session “Teaching with Data.” We have assembled a panel of experts who are not only able to share specific pedagogical techniques for how to bring data into the literature classroom, but given the presidential theme of “Working Conditions” they are also expertly suited to share their insights on issues of labor and ethics as they relate to working with data in both academic and non-academic contexts. Given both the recent turn in the Digital Humanities toward data-driven and quantitative methods of study, and the increasing demand for interdisciplinary collaboration between humanists and data scientists, this is an incredibly timely panel.

Our panelists work in a variety of different institutional spaces across academia, giving them unique insights into the working conditions of data-driven digital scholarship. Lisa Marie Rhody is deputy director of Digital Initiatives at the CUNY Graduate Center as well as holding faculty appointments in Liberal Studies, Digital Humanities, Data Analysis and Visualization, and Interactive Technology and Pedagogy. Emily Esten, who holds advanced degrees in both public humanities and digital humanities, is the Arnold and Deanne Kaplan Collection of Early American Judaica Curator of Digital Humanities at Penn Libraries. Miriam Posner is an assistant professor at the UCLA Department of Information Studies and a foundational figure in digital humanities scholarship. Jacqueline Wernimont is Distinguished Chair of Digital Humanities and Social Engagement at Dartmouth College, as well as a co-Director of HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaborative) and Director of the Digital Justice Lab at Dartmouth.
