Thari Zweers
Biographical Sketch: Thari Zweers is a PhD candidate in the program of Medieval Studies at Cornell University. She pursues questions related to the construction of Europe and Europeanness by assessing late medieval literary works written across linguistic, cultural and national divides during one of Europe’s most formative periods, the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453). Her dissertation project seeks to reconsider the transcultural linkages crafted by the proto-national literatures of European states that would give way to the racially inflected cultural justifications for European imperialisms and colonialisms by the end of the fifteenth century. Her research focuses on the works of Giovanni Boccaccio, John Gower, Geoffrey Chaucer, Christine de Pizan and the anonymous Middle Dutch work the Dietsche Doctrinale.
Her award-winning essay ‘Godfrey of Viterbo’s Pantheon and John Gower’s Confessio Amantis: The Story of Apollonius Retold’ has been published in the August 2019 issue of Accessus: A Journal of Premodern Literature and New Media. Her article ‘Gerald of Wales’ The Journey Through Wales: Reinstating the Greatness of the Welsh Nation’ was published in 2015 in issue 12.1 of Hortulus: The Online Graduate Journal of Medieval Studies. Thari furthermore has extensive experience teaching academic language proficiency courses at Cornell University and the University of Groningen (Netherlands). She holds a BA, MA and Master of Education from the University of Groningen as well as an MA from Cornell University.
