Early modern meritocracies: Conceptualizations of value, valorization, achievement and entitlement in early modern literature and culture

Some cultural narratives that are today classified as 'meritocratic' gained traction in the early modern era. We invite papers that explore how such narratives both shaped and were shaped by writing and the arts.
