The contents of tocols (tocopherols and tocotrienols) vary depending on the genetic background and environmental condition such as growing year. In this study, the contents of tocols were investigated in 23 Japonica type and 4 Tongil type rice cultivars harvested between 2010 and 2011. Four tocopherol homologues, i.e., α-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherol, and three tocotrienol homologues, i.e., α-, γ- and δ-tocotrienol were identified. β-tocotrienol was not detected in this study. The total content of tocols in 27 cultivars were detected in the range of 14.86∼38.19mg/kg brown rice. The content of tocopherols in Japonica type cultivars was higher than that in Tongil type cultivars. Meanwhile, tocotrienols content in Tongil type cultivars was higher than that in Japonica type cultivars. The major tocols homologue in 23 Japonica type cultivars was α-tocopherol, while that in Tongil type cultivars, namely Dasan 1, Hanareum, Segyuejinmi, and Cheonseog, was γ-tocotrienol.
