Genetic Analysis on Namil(SA)-flo2, a Japonica Floury Mutant Line Suitable for Dry Milling Process
Genetic Analysis on Namil(SA)-flo2, a Japonica Floury Mutant Line Suitable for Dry Milling Process
Changes in food preferences and dietary habits of Korean prone to decrease consumption of the traditional energy source, rice. Although there have been several efforts to increase rice consumption rate, by developing various processed foods using rice flour, grain hardness of rice has been the most significant limiting factor. Through our previous studies, we identified a mutant rice line, Namil(SA)-flo2, derived from sodium azide treatment on a Korean japonica cultivar, Namil. Namil(SA)-flo2 has floury endosperm and thereby which is suitable for dry milling process. To dissecting genetics of Namil(SA)-flo2, one mapping population was constructed by using F2 progenies from the cross between Namil(SA)-flo2 and Milyang23, a Tongil type. Each F2 progenies were evaluated in terms of DNA marker genotypes, and F2:3 seeds were evaluated in terms of floury character. Association analysis between marker genotype and evaluated phenotype of progeny lines were adopted to localize the putative chromosomal locations involved in floury endosperm. One major putative locus, RM0164 (R2=84.8%), was localized on chromosome 5. Further genetic interpretations on RM0164 indicated that the genetic mode of the modified allele is additive gene action within the mapping population.
