Plenary Lecture: Ravigadevi Sambanthamurthi - "Oil Palm Genome Unzipped: What we found in the genes"

Dr. Ravigadevi Sambanthamurthi is the Director of the Advanced Biotechnology and Breeding Centre of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and Honorary Professor of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. She is one of the pioneers in research on oil palm biotechnology, having led genetic engineering strategies for modifying oil composition in the oil palm. She currently leads the MPOB Oil Palm Genome Project. Her team sequenced the African and South American oil palm genomes and discovered the SHELL gene responsible for up to 30 % more palm oil yield. The team received international acclaim when it recently published two back-to-back articles related to the oil palm genome in Nature. Dr. Sambanthamurthi is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and has received numerous national and international awards including Knight of the International Order of Merit of Inventors from the International Federation of Inventors Association, Tech Museum Award and Rotary Gold Award for outstanding scientific merit.
