Plenary Lecture: Matthew Bellgard - "The Bioinformatics Missing Link: A Systems Approach to Personalised Medicine and Food Security"

Matt Bellgard has developed expertise in the areas of comparative genomic analysis, computational biology, molecular evolution, bioinformatics, integrated system development and pattern recognition. His research into computational biology has resulted in important publications in alignment algorithm and sequence analysis methodologies. He has conducted comparative genomics and evolutionary analysis of both prokaryotes and eukaryote genomes. He is co-inventor in a number vaccine candidate patents against pathogenic bacteria and is on 12 full patents. Professor Bellgard leads bioinformatics consortium for sequencing and assembling the 7.2Gb cattle tick genome and contributing to large cereal genome sequencing projects, such as the International Barley Genome Sequencing Consortium with key local Barley plant breeders. He is project director for a number of web applications, many of which are open source bioinformatics systems.
