Plenary Lecture: Jae-Yong Han - "Genome Engineering in Avian Species"

Professor, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Seoul National University, KOREA

Prof. Jae Yong Han received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Department of Animal Science and Technology, Seoul National University and a Ph.D. degree from the Department of Animal Science, University of Minnesota, USA in 1991. He is currently a professor in the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Seoul National University. For the past two decades, his major research area has been avian transgenesis and germ cell biotechnology. He has undertaken the analysis of specific gene expression patterns of avian germ cells during embryonic development.

Prof. Han has made contributions in his research, including the production of germline chimeras and interspecies chimeras by germ cell manipulation and transgenesis. This research has contributed to new strategies in the poultry industry, as well as developing innovative technologies in germ cell manipulation. His lab has established chicken embryonic germ (EG) cells as pluripotent stem cells. Other research has included the development of an efficient transgenic system for stable integration using a transposon system in birds and establishing programmable genome editing for avian species using TALEN methods. This research has contributed to the development of animal models and promoted new developments in the poultry industry.
