Wheat and barley are both important cereals worldwide. The intergeneric hybridization of these species makes it possible to transfer agronomically useful traits (e.g. earliness, nutritional parameters, drought- and salt tolerance) from barley into wheat. New wheat/barley disomic addition lines were developed containing the 2H, 3H, 4H, 6H and 7H chromosomes of two winter barley cultivars, the six-rowed Ukrainian Manas and the two-rowed German  Igri. The addition lines were identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) followed by confirmation with barley SSR markers. The morphological parameters of the addition lines were described. The heading characters of the addition lines were studied in the field and in phytotron under short and long day illuminations and without vernalization. The 7H addition lines were the earliest in both cultivar combination under each treatment. The 4H additions were the latest in the phytotron under each treatment except in the field in 2012 where the 6H Asakaze/Manas addition lines was the latest. The observed 6 and 7 days differences between the 7H and 4H additions in the field increased into 52 and 44 days under short day illumination in the phytotron in the two cultivar combinations.

Spontaneous wheat/barley translocation lines were detected using GISH among the progenies of the hybrids.  An increased β-glucan level was detected in the 4BS.7HL translocation line, which helped to map the HvCslF6 gene in the centromeric region of 7HL. The development of new wheat/barley translocations is in progress from the addition lines. This work was supported by OTKA75381.
