Breeding for Transgressive Segregation in Cotton: Do We Need Molecular Markers
Breeding for Transgressive Segregation in Cotton: Do We Need Molecular Markers
Date: Monday, January 14, 2013
Room: Grand Exhibit Hall
Selection for trasngressive segregation of a single complex trait is difficult and simultaneous selection for transgressive segregants on multiple complex traits is extremely difficult if not possible. In Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), the superior fiber quality traits of G. barbadense have not been achieved, while transfer of desirable genes from G. barbadense to further increase Upland cotton yield appeared unreachable. This presentation will first present results from traditional quantitative trait (QTL) mapping studies and then provide successful examples where elite breeding lines were obtained from transgressive segregation for multiple traits in cotton.
