Barley (
Hordeum vulgare L.) has a long history of genetics research, making it a good model for marker-assisted breeding. Plant height trait has been explored in barley breeding programs to improve resistance to lodging. Spike length and angle have been used as yield components in cereal plants as they have positive correlation to the grain yield. In this study, we determined quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for barley height, spike length, and spike angle based on SNP loci.
A new recombinant inbred line (RIL) population consisting of 142 lines was developed from a Falcon/Azhul (FA) cross. Falcon is a semidwarf, six-row hulless feed barley with long spikes and of nodding attitude. Azhul is short, six-row hulless food barley with short spikes and of erect attitude. Parents, RILs, and checks were planted in 2008 in Baton Rouge, LA; College Station, TX; and Leeston, Irwell, New Zealand and in 2009 in Aberdeen and Tetonia, ID. SNP genotyping was conducted by using Illumina’s Golden Gate assay.
Based on QTL analysis of height, we discovered a single QTL centered at 89.2 cM on chromosome 3H. QTL analysis of spike length detected a single QTL on chromosomes 2H centered at 102.8 cM, 3H centered at 38.2 cM, and 4H centered at 19.0 cM. QTL analysis of spike angle detected a single QTL on chromosome 3H centered at 38.2 cM and on 5H centered at 106.7 cM. This research was funded by the Idaho Barley Commission and the CSREES Barley for Rural Development Grant.
