Selection for trasngressive segregation of a single complex trait is difficult and simultaneous selection for transgressive segregants on multiple complex traits is extremely difficult if not possible. In Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), the superior fiber quality traits of Pima cotton (G. barbadense) have not been achieved, while transfer of desirable genes from Pima cotton to further increase Upland cotton yield appeared to be unreachable. This presentation will first present results from traditional quantitative trait (QTL) mapping studies and then provide successful examples where elite breeding lines were obtained from transgressive segregation for single and multiple traits in Upland cotton through interspecific breeding between Upland and Pima cotton.
