BREAD Workshop
New collaborations by a broad range of scientists and engineers are needed that lead to a different way of thinking about the major problems facing developing country agriculture. The National Science Foundation has partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support these collaborations and the transformative research that will emerge through the Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development or BREAD program. BREAD leverages advances in a wide range of scientific fields, extending opportunities to include international partners in efforts to generate sustainable, science-based solutions to problems of smallholder agriculture in developing countries. Through these new partnerships and projects, it is anticipated that BREAD will lead a change in the research culture to one that is more broadly inclusive of these needs. Since 2009, the BREAD program has funded 24 projects involving 32 U.S institutions in 20 states partnering with more than 26 institutions in 19 countries. In FY 2013, BREAD will hold a fourth year competition that differs significantly from previous competitions. The workshop will include a question and answer session about the FY 2013 competition as well as presentations of selected BREAD projects. All participants are welcome to attend.
