Buffalo

Water buffalo were domesticated over 5,000 years ago and are economically important animals in many parts of the world. They provide more than 5% of the worlds milk supply. The world population of buffalo is about 158M in comparison with around 1.3B cattle, 1B sheep 500-600M goats. There are two types of domestic water buffalo, the River Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) which are the predominant type found in the west from India to Europe. The second type, the Swamp Buffalo (Bubalus carabanesis), is found more frequenty in the east from India to the Philippines. Improvement of buffalo production would have a positive impact on agriculture in many regions of the world where buffalo production predominates with respect to cattle. The workshop will describe progress of an international collaborative project to sequence and analyse the genome of the buffalo. The project has three phases, 1) creation and annotation of the reference buffalo genome sequence, 2) detection of genomic variations among the buffalo and the development of a genotyping SNP panel to support research and genetic selection of buffalo, and 3) the analysis of genomes among buffalo breeds and comparison with other species to explore population structure and the evolution of the buffalo genome. The project is an open collaboration and new participants and contributors are welcome
