The Ensembl project (http://www.ensembl.org) creates and distributes genome annotations and provides integrated views of other valuable genomic data for supported chordate genomes.  Our resources are intended to serve as community reference data sets on which other genomic research can be built. As such, we have developed an extensive, open software infrastructure including analysis pipelines, data mining and analysis tools including BioMart and the Ensembl Variant Effect Predictor (VEP), application programing interfaces (APIs) and a genome browser interface.  Our software is open source and available under a permissive Apache-style license, while our data resources are distributed without restriction. As of Ensembl release 74 (December 2013), 63 species are fully supported. Highlights of the past year include the addition of sheep and duck, new assemblies for chicken and cat and the inclusion of phenotype data from Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals (OMIA), as well as improvements to the web interface and Variant Effect Predictor and further development of our REST service.

Ensembl Genomes (http://www.ensemblgenomes.org) consists of five sub-portals (for bacteria, protists, fungi, plants and invertebrate metazoa) designed to complement the Ensembl portal, currently containing data for over 9000 species. Recent developments include the addition of wheat and two wheat progenitors, medicago, several agricultural pests and pathogens and a new assembly for rice.

Together Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes offer a single unified interface across the taxonomic space.

This presentation will consist of a short introduction to Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes followed by a demonstration with an emphasis on recently added data and functionality.
