Train Online: Web-Based Learning for Life Scientists

Date: Sunday, January 12, 2014
Time: 11:45 AM
Room: California
Katrina Costa , EMBL-EBI, Cambridge, United Kingdom
As molecular biology becomes more data-driven, bench scientists need to become more familiar with the range of bioinformatics resources and tools available in the public domain. EMBL-EBI is a leading provider of free biological data resources and has a comprehensive training programme to enable a wide range of users to develop their bioinformatics skills.

Online training is becoming increasingly important for overcoming time and resource constraints, enabling scientists to learn at their own time and pace – from anywhere in the world. EMBL-EBI has developed Train online (www.ebi.ac.uk/training/online/), a free web-based learning resource that has been specifically designed to equip life scientists with the knowledge and skills they need to analyse and interpret their biological data using EMBL-EBI's publicly available resources. Train online covers a diverse range of topics, including genes and genomics, gene expression, literature, ontologies, pathways and networks, proteins and proteomics, and small molecules. The key features of Train online are: 1) it is free to use and registration is not required, 2) the courses are written by our resource experts and are complementary to our face-to-face sessions, 3) no previous experience of bioinformatics is needed to complete the tutorials, 4) the courses contain guided exercises and quizzes, providing an interactive experience and allowing users to assess their own learning.

This presentation will provide a short introduction to Train online and show you how to navigate the courses.
