Genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) provides a simple and cost effective approach to rapidly characterize diverse genomes.  However, maize’s genomic instability, rapid linkage disequilibrium decay, and high diversity all pose challenges to using GBS.  Powerful bioinformatic approaches for imputation and genetic mapping of GBS tags have now been developed.  These tools are now making GBS regularly accessible to germplasm characterization, genomic selection, and GWAS.
