DNA microarrays offer cost-effective and accurate genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for phenotype/genotype associations and routine screening of buffalos for lactation traits.

The expert-designed Axiom® Buffalo Genotyping Array interrogates 90,000 SNPs in 96-array plate format. The array was designed by the International Buffalo Genome Consortium  (IBGC) and USDA and is being used world-wide for genome-wide association studies and for characterizing different river and swamp buffalo breeds including the Mediterranean, Murrah, Jaffarabadi, and Nili-Ravi .

Any set of markers from the Axiom 90k buffalo genotyping array can be transferred to the lower-density higher-throughout Axiom 384-array plate format with 100% fidelity and manufacturing reproducibility and without any SNP dropouts. The Axiom 384-format offers the capability to genotype of all four river buffalo breeds that are represented on the expert-designed Axiom 90k panel. Accurate representation of each breed will be ensured by including up to 12,000 markers per breed

A single world-wide array that is applicable for multiple breeds will allow the IBGC, International Buffalo Federation, USDA and other buffalo breeder organizations to attain the highest participation for routine screen applications and achieve the most cost-effective price per sample.
