The European Variation Archive at EMBL-EBI

Date: Monday, January 12, 2015
Room:
Gary Saunders , European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), Hinxton, United Kingdom
EMBL-EBI has launched a brand new genetic variation archive: European Variation Archive (EVA; www.ebi.ac.uk/eva). EVA archives all types of variation data from all species. Currently, more than 30% of all data in EVA is from non-human species. We aim to provide a resource to the non-model organism community that can accession, archive and provide views of genetic variation data more quickly and in a more granular manner than any other resource of this nature, worldwide. We shall present at the conference our latest submission workflow(s), which ensure that each individual allele is accessioned per submitter, and describe how we work in tandem with our collaborators at dbSNP to ensure that variants are archived and clustered in the most biologically relevant manner.

In addition to response time, another distinct advantage of archiving genetic variation data via EVA is the application of the EVA Portal suite of tools to the data. All variants submitted to EVA are run through our value-added pipeline that calculates, for example, Variant Effect Predictor (VEP; ENSEMBL) consequences, and displays these results in a user-friendly manner via HTTP5 compliant technologies. Although EVA has been in existence for less than six months, we are immensely proud of our resource and believe that it offers many advantages to users that choose to submit their data directly to EBML-EBI.
