Sample material such as seeds or leaves can vary greatly in consistency as well as in sugar, secondary metabolites, protein and fat composition - all of which can affect the quality and purity of the extracted nucleic acid and the subsequent performance of downstream applications. To provide the most efficient and effective extraction method LGC offers a range of different extraction technologies including sbeadexTM, a unique and proprietary magnetic bead-based extraction chemistry.

Rape and vegetable seeds can often contain high levels of polyphenols which are potential inhibitors for any down-stream applications. The unique technology of sbeadex includes a two-step binding mechanism that enables users to perform a second wash step using pure water. This results in higher yields, higher DNA purity and efficiently removes all inhibiting salts and alcohols. As no alcohol is used during the extraction, drying and evaporation of the DNA is not necessary resulting in an extraction protocol that minimises time, money and waste.

The oKtopure instrument from LGC delivers increased throughput with extraction protocols optimised for the magnetic bead-based sbeadex chemistry. In case of an 8 hour working day, up to 5000 leaf or seed samples can be extracted. Additionally, the semi-automated Genespin instrument in combination with spin plate-based Kleargene extractions (96  or 384-well format) can extract up to 20000 samples per day. Extracted DNA samples are suitable for all common downstream technologies including SNP genotyping using KASPTM chemistry.
