Nested Association Mapping (NAM) is a powerful multi-parent approach that combines the strengths of association mapping in diverse populations with those of linkage mapping in biparental families. We have developed a grain sorghum NAM using the US breeding line RTx430 as a common parent and 10 diverse founders that represent all major botanical races of sorghum. This NAM population captures about 75% of the global genetic diversity of sorghum in 2,500 lines (10 recombinant inbred line families), now at the F8 generation. Here we will describe the genetic structure of the NAM population based on genotyping-by-sequencing. Further, we will present preliminary NAM-GWAS mapping of quantitative trait loci for flowering time and plant morphology traits. Finally, we will highlight opportunities for the sorghum community to use this NAM population as a shared genomics platform to accelerate sorghum breeding and genetics.
