By analyzing the genome sequence of Sorghum bicolor, a new family of LTR retrotransposon was identified. The retrotransposon is ~10kb in length and carries an annotated protein-coding gene that is specific to Sorghum bicolor. Comparing to several other sorghum species, we show that the retrotransposon was uniquely amplified in the Sorghum bicolor species. In addition, there is a higher copy number of the retrotransposon in wild genotypes than domesticated S. bicolor races. Its association with a heterochromatin region of reduced SNP frequency on chromosome 7 suggests a role that the transposon may play in genetic innovation.
