SNP genotyping is and will remain  a very important tool for molecular breeding. For many purposes, such as novel SNP validation, marker-assisted backcrossing, QTL mapping and others, cost-effective, flexible SNP genotyping solutions are needed. Although fixed-content multiplexing systems are fairly cost-efficient, most of the currently available platforms have limited flexibility and scalability, such as fixed (minimal) ordering volumes and/or fixed number of SNPs, of which only a subset is informative in a given germplasm. In addition, when custom-made, these systems have relatively long production cycles. Consequently, projects involving custom-made fixed content SNP assays typically last at least several months from design to completion.

We present KeyGene®SNPSelect technology as a fully customizable, highly flexible next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based genotyping solution, currently capable of generating up to 8 million SNP datapoints per Illumina HiSeq2500 (single end) sequencing run, i.e. delivering 500,000  datapoints per lane of a single flow cell.  As detection is NGS-based, the output level will scale with improvements in NGS platform read numbers, further reducing the cost per genotype. Furthermore, KeyGene SNPSelect  allows highly accurate genotyping of any number of SNPs in any number of samples, is NGS platform agnostic and allows a fast turn-around time. Finally, Keygene SNPSelect assay composition is fully flexible between experiments by adding or removing probe sets of individual SNPs. Taken together, these features position KeyGene SNPSelect as an attractive solution to accelerate molecular (crop) breeding.
