The heterogeneity of clinical manifestations observed within and across related complex syndromes poses a major challenge to genetic studies. We will highlight recent advances from four canine disease sets: autoimmune, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)-like disease; autoinflammatory, Shar-Pei Autoinflammatory Disease (SPAID); cardiac, Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) and behaivour, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and demonstrate how a combination of genetic and molecular definition may help to unravel the mechanisms of different clinical features of relevance to various disease phenotypes in dogs and humans.
