In the end of 2014, a research team of BGI, together with collaborators from all over the world published a series in Science on analysis of 48 avian genomes. This reflects the power of omics platform in plant and animal researches. This is also one example of large scale omics based plant and animal research projects at BGI. For plant, we are using our omics platforms to generate big data for understanding important plant related questions, including evolution, nitrogen fixation, etc. Similar to the avian genome project, proposals and collaborations are welcome now for the large scale plant omics project and we aimed to publish the data and the analysis of this project before the end of 2017. In order to facilitate such large scale omics studies, different techniques, including new sequencing platform, highly efficient capture technique and highly efficient amplification technique are under development. Here, the overall situation of the plant and animal genomic studies at BGI will be summarized, details on the large scale plant omics study will be given and different plant and animal genomic researches related techniques will be introduced.
