Date: Saturday, January 10, 2015
Time: 8:00 AM
Room: San Diego
Parag Chitnis , National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Washington, DC
Rapidly growing world population and improvements in the economic conditions in the developing countries have increased the demand on food, particularly animal products. Transformative technologies and management practices are required to address this grand challenge. Animal genomics is likely to play a significant role in ensuring sustainable production of nutritious and safe food. This presentation will focus on the programs and future opportunities offered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture for advancing research in animal genomics, genomics-assisted breeding, and genomics-enabled systems research. Examples from existing portfolio of genomics research will be used to illustrate how rapid advances in genomics and its applications in agriculture have been used in different fields supported by NIFA.
