Life Sciences Cyberinfrastructure at Your Fingertips: Using Internet2 to Power Scientific Collaboration
Collaborating researchers increasingly rely on High Performance Computing (HPC) and cloud-based services to manage and analyze large data sets. Genomics, large scale imaging, and simulations will continue to drive HPC applications in the life sciences. Better access to HPC resources and more cost-effective research platforms and instrumentation are additional HPC drivers. Furthermore, collaboration today often means accessing and integrating data from related disciplines like climatology. Internet2 is a highly diverse research and education community that includes a wide array of connected HPC and cloud resources such as iPlant/TACC. Internet2 operates an advanced ultra high-speed network that reduces the constraints of time and distance on global scientific collaboration. Recognizing that high-bandwidth networks are necessary but not sufficient, the DoE’s Energy Sciences Network (ESNet) and Internet2 have developed a design approach called the Science DMZ that enables the exchange of massive data sets between remote collaborators and HPC centers. This session will examine several organizations – government, industry and academic - that have successfully accelerated their collaborative research workflows through improved cyberinfrastructure.
