Popular consensus is high-throughput non-invasive digital phenotyping is a vital tool to accelerate identification of high-yielding crop genotypes in controlled environments or field conditions.

Similarly, platforms may need to increase capacity (research populations of tens of thousands of plants or more) to investigate heritable traits across multi-genotypes, variations of abiotic stresses (root and shoot, even abiotic and biotic) to assist breeders and physiologists alike to reliably quantify traits from genetic and environmental noise.

Presented here is a series of simple and affordable solutions to common high-throughput phenotyping platforms problems such as:

  • Robust and affordable solution to increasing throughput
  • Options to reducing environmental variation
  • New platforms for field-like conditions in the GH

These next-generation phenotyping platforms may not be addressed from a single technology provider and it is assumed, in phenomics as in the genomics revolution that researchers will benefit from a range of companies collaborating together for optimized detection and characterization of plant traits. Hopefully, and in time, standardization, modelling incorporating genetic & environmental effects and may even provide prediction of phenotypic outcomes. The Plant Phenotyping Partnership is recognition of the dire need to provide innovative solutions to sustain future agricultural production in changing climates.
