Sequencing capacity and speed on next generation platforms continues to rise while the overall cost of individual sequences decreases. Exploiting this inexpensive sequencing capacity for specialized or targeted applications, particularly when many samples are involved, can be very expensive. MonsterPlex is a novel PCR-based technology to sequence pools of specific targets (e.g. 72 targets) from 100’s to 1000’s of individuals at an overall low cost per target.  Application of MonsterPlex to single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analyses in plant pathogens in vitro (e.g. downy mildew on spinach and late blight on potato and tomato) and to parentage panels in animals will be overviewed and discussed.
