Transcription analysis using RNA seq can provide deep insight to gene expression patterns. When applied to individual tissues RNA seq can help us understand tissue function. We have applied this approach to identify genes expressed in the chicken kidney, comparing those with the patterns from other tissues to identify the genes that are enriched in the kidney.  We focused on evaluating the expression of membrane bound transporters and gene products involved in nitrogen balance. A total of 23 solute carrier family transporters are enriched in the kidney, including ones for glucose, nucleosides and peptides. Additional, we have identified three genes product involved in the urea cycle that are enriched in the kidney. We discussed the results in the context of avian renal physiology
