2854Bioenergy - Towards Increasing Oil in Nonseed Biomass
Although significant focus has been given to engineering plants for enhanced cellulose and reduced lignin content for ethanol production, challenges remain in meeting the rapidly growing demand for biofuels. As an alternative, crops might be developed to accumulate higher amounts of oils in nonseed biomass, which then can be harvested for the recovery of oil and cellulose products for biofuel production. Various molecular approaches, including transcriptomics, have been taken to understand the regulatory mechanism of oil biosynthesis in oil-rich nonseed tissues. Furthermore, important strategies that alter fatty acid metabolism to favor oil accumulation have been developed and plants have been engineered successfully to produce oil-rich leaves. This workshop will address how to increase oil-content in nonseed biomass for bioenergy purpose, and discuss the implications and challenges for producing oils in biomass.
