3531Avian Genomics - Going Wild!
At the end of 2014, Avian Genomics has seen the parallel publication of eight papers in one special issue of Science, accompanied by 20 more papers in other journals such as Genome Biology. This big bang in avian genomics featured the analysis of 48 consistently annotated bird genomes. Almost all orders of birds were represented which offers an unprecedented phylogenomic and biodiversity framework for genomics to enrich ecology and evolution studies. Avian Genomics will thus be a pioneer in comprehensively applying genomics to ecology and evolution. Genomics has a long tradition with avian models, namely chicken and other galliforms such as turkey. Agricultural genomics can now be framed in a broad evolutionary perspective. In that way, agricultural and wild Avian Genomics will fertilise each other reciprocatively.
