Session Proposal: Natural Hydrogen (H2): Unlocking its Potential for Generation and Recovery (AGU25)

MR005
Natural Hydrogen (H2): Unlocking its Potential for Generation and Recovery

Session ID#: 248059

Session Description:
Geological or natural hydrogen (H2) is carbon-free and generated from redox reactions between water and iron-bearing rocks in the Earth’s subsurface. Exploring natural hydrogen reservoirs and stimulating hydrogen production are believed to be a new ‘gold rush’ as it has the potential to provide clean energy and a new pathway to tackle climate change. This session aims to unravel the mystery of natural and stimulated hydrogen occurrence and unlock its potential by focusing on: (1) mineral geochemistry of natural hydrogen generation; (2) reactive transport of hydrogen at different time and spatial scales; (3) accumulation, migration, and consumption of hydrogen in various geobiological processes; (4) geophysics for exploration of natural hydrogen; (5) identification of natural hydrogen seeps; (6) discoveries of natural hydrogen reservoirs; (7) stimulated hydrogen production from the subsurface in carbon-free and carbon-negative manners; (8) challenges and opportunities in technology, infrastructure, environment, policy, and public engagement toward commercialization globally.
