Session Proposal: Fundamentals of Geological Storage: Geochemistry, Geomechanics, Fluid Dynamics, and Caprock Integrity (AGU25)

MR004
Fundamentals of Geological Storage: Geochemistry, Geomechanics, Fluid Dynamics, and Caprock Integrity

Session ID#: 248925

Session Description:
Effective geological storage of gases like CO2, H2, and compressed air involves developing underground storage solutions to utilize excess renewable energy through methods such as power-to-gas. Scaling up geological storage capabilities requires deeper insights into geochemical reactions, geomechanical behaviors, microbial activities, and fluid dynamics occurring within reservoir and caprock formations. Furthermore, sophisticated multi-scale and multi-physics modeling approaches are necessary to effectively translate scientific insights into practical applications. This session invites both experimental and simulation studies that explore various dimensions of geological storage, including: Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) in salt caverns, saline aquifers, depleted oil and gas reservoirs, and coal seams; Integration of Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) systems within the power grid; Innovative approaches to geologic CO2 storage in conventional and unconventional geological reservoirs.
