Observations and Models of Glacier Change
Session ID#: 248996
Session Description:
Glaciers are critical hydrologic components in mountainous regions across the globe. Glacier change can affect geohazards, water resources, and sea levels. Predicting and quantifying these consequences requires improved understanding of the physical processes that govern glacier change, and innovative fusion of observations and models. In support of internationally coordinated efforts aimed at satisfying these requirements, including the Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI), Glacier Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS), and Glacier Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise (GlaMBIE-2), this session unites in situ, remote sensing, and modeling studies of glacier change outside of the ice sheets, from local to regional to global scales. We invite contributions that apply creative techniques involving machine learning/AI or novel observation techniques. We furthermore aim to highlight studies that address particularly challenging and unresolved scientific problems that impede the precision of glacier change projections, including glacier sliding/surging, firn densification, albedo feedback, englacial hydrology, and glacier area change detection.
