Decoding the surface elevation change signal of glaciers and ice sheets
Session ID#: 249005
Session Description:
The evolving surface elevation of mountain glaciers and ice sheets is measured with ever increasing precision. However, interpreting this signal presents scientific challenges. Atmospheric, oceanic, and ice dynamic processes imprint themselves as spatially, temporally complex patterns of surface-elevation change that may obscure the signature of individual physical forcings. These forcings include surface mass balance, flux divergence, firn densification, bed erosion, subglacial sediment deposition, and subglacial hydrology. Mass continuity provides a framework to isolate and thereby decode these complex and sometimes coupled processes. This session invites contributions that advance our understanding of the discrete physical processes that drive land ice elevation change. Our aim is to showcase creative research that parses distributed glacier and ice-sheet elevation change signals on various spatial and temporal scales, including analyses that leverage mass continuity.
