Session Proposal: Understanding and Quantifying the Human Impacts on Water Cycle (AGU25)

Understanding and Quantifying the Human Impacts on Water Cycle

Session ID#: 249093

Session Description:
Human activities have been causing significant alterations to the Earth's surface, leading to heightened fluctuations in the global water cycle. Conceptual models typically fail to accurately capture manmade processes such as irrigation, groundwater pumping, and reservoir management. Water scarcity and hydrologic severe events are considered significant risks to water supply and ecosystem sustainability, exacerbated by such human effects. Satellite remote sensing is frequently the most pragmatic approach to capture the impact of human influences on the land surface.  This session invites submissions on: (1) the challenges and requirements for developing representations of human influences, (2) innovative methods that focus on capturing the human impact on the hydrologic cycle using observations and models, (3) measuring the wider effects of the human impact on hydrological extremes. Studies focused on historical reconstruction as well as future projections and forecasts using open research tools, interoperable data, and models are encouraged.
