Session Proposal: Underground Hydrogen Storage: Numerical, Analytical, and Laboratory Investigations (AGU25)

H143
Underground Hydrogen Storage: Numerical, Analytical, and Laboratory Investigations

Session ID#: 250461

Session Description:
Hydrogen could be a potential energy carrier that is not only clean but also has a higher energy density per mass compared to natural gas. Therefore, underground hydrogen storage (UHS) is required as a promising solution to balance the energy supply and demand. Salt caverns, depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs and aquifers could be good solutions for UHS implementation, however, potential complexities could result in hydrogen trapping within porous media at the intersection of fluid flow, geology and operational condition, which needs to be evaluated. This session invites interdisciplinary contributions on laboratory, modeling and monitoring of underground hydrogen storage systems. Topics include multiphase and reactive transport modeling, reservoir rock/ fluid screening, operational condition optimization, wellbore and cap-rock integrity, techno-economic analyses and other underground gas storage topics, including UGS and CCS. We encourage the studies using numerical/analytical modeling, laboratory experiments and monitoring technologies.
