Session Proposal: Physical Properties of Earth Materials (PPEM): From Transient to Steady-State Deformation (AGU25)

Physical Properties of Earth Materials (PPEM): From Transient to Steady-State Deformation

Session ID#: 249327

Session Description:
Earth and planetary materials evolve from short-term, transient responses to long-term, steady-state deformation as boundary conditions and rock properties change over time and/or as strain increases. Transient phenomena—including transient creep, brittle damage, aging, strain localization, and fabric development—can strongly influence the mechanical properties and geodynamic behavior of rocks, ice, and other geological materials. This session focuses on understanding how materials transition from initial, time-dependent deformation to persistent, steady-state flow across a range of environments and spatiotemporal scales. We invite contributions from experimental, theoretical, field-based, and geophysical studies that investigate the mechanisms governing transient and steady-state deformation, and the complex interactions among them.
