Session Proposal: Synthesis of Ancient Engineering, Architecture, and Linguistics Exemplified by Geo-archaeological Sites (AGU25)

SY041
Synthesis of Ancient Engineering, Architecture, and Linguistics Exemplified by Geo-archaeological Sites

Session ID#: 249776

Session Description:
Archaeological sites pre-dating European colonialism often manifest transdisciplinary undercurrents. Built environments of some seamlessly merge with underlying terrane, even featuring geologic formations as centerpieces of city design. Those elegantly integrate engineering, architectural, and geologic knowledge. Meanwhile, linguistic analyses of ancient tourist’s rare engravings reveal men and women possessing the power of literacy, wealth of time, and transportation reminiscent of modern tourism. However, many sites remain understudied, especially in impoverished nations. Non-disruptive analyses (e.g., X-Ray Fluorescence, lidar photogrammetry, aerial radar, resistivity) with local researchers can bridge such gaps. Sigiriya exemplifies the potential as a 4D palace city: inselberg summit complex mirroring a designed landscape ~150 m beneath spanning ~ 1x3 km; time progression documented by ancient chroniclers and tourists. We welcome submissions on knowledge domains crucial to the construction of sites like Sigiriya, and implications for our civilization. Sample characterization for insight into ancient sanitation infrastructure and foodways are likewise welcomed.
