Exploring the Influence of Environmental Contaminants on Soil Biogeochemistry: Advances in Analytical Techniques and Methodologies
Exploring the Influence of Environmental Contaminants on Soil Biogeochemistry: Advances in Analytical Techniques and Methodologies
Session ID#: 249839
Session Description:
Understanding the interactions of soil organic matter (SOM), minerals, and emerging contaminants with environmental processes is essential for assessing their impact on agricultural and urban soils. This session will spotlight recent advancements and methodologies in analyzing these components using advanced techniques. Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Py-GCMS), a long-standing tool for studying complex organic matter, is gaining popularity due to its minimal sample preparation and high-resolution data output. Similarly, Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) has been used for years to measure stable isotope ratios in environmental samples. Combining Py-GCMS and IRMS offers unique benefits in tracing organic matter sources and assessing the stability of mineral-associated organic matter. The session will integrate diverse areas of interest—Mineral-Associated Organic Matter (MAOM); emerging contaminants like microplastics and PFAS; and Py-GCMS, IRMS, and other advanced technologies that provide a comprehensive view of soil dynamics, contaminant impacts on biogeochemistry, and the transformative influence of modern analytical techniques.
