Geothermal Energy from Deep Basins and Hot Rocks: The Earth is Always On
Session ID#: 250447
Session Description:
This session will explore how to capture and convert the Earth’s 47 terawatts of heat flow into usable energy for homes, businesses, and manufacturing plants. From reused abandoned fossil fuel infrastructure to turbines turned by geothermal systems, we’ll look at existing technology and new developments in geothermal applications. This session invites contributions related to system design, resource assessment, heat flow mapping, fracture permeability models, or mineral extraction from geothermal systems. We’ll also include research from the intersection of science and policy on installed capacity for heat and power, geothermal use for electricity production, and geothermal applications to agriculture and health. The desire for a local, secure, clean, and plentiful energy source is significant, and the deployment of technology to unlock geothermal resources is part of the solution.
