Resourcing the Clean Energy Economy: Finding and Developing Sustainable Materials to Build Renewable Energy Infrastructure
Resourcing the Clean Energy Economy: Finding and Developing Sustainable Materials to Build Renewable Energy Infrastructure
Session ID#: 250576
Session Description:
This session will explore the upstream supply of materials required to build global renewable energy infrastructure. We’ll include research on the copper needed to wire the world, minerals that are critical for energy storage, rare Earth elements that are vital to technology operations, silica for solar panels, and more. We welcome discussions on exploration for new deposits of metals and industrial materials, sustainable mining practices, mine waste recycling, and secondary production from existing mines. Submissions related to new technologies designed to reduce carbon in milling, smelting, hydrometallurgy, and refining are also welcome in this session. These early links in the supply chain for renewable energy infrastructure can be made more cost-effective, sustainable, and reliable as we work to decarbonize the energy system and further reduce the impact of climate change.
