Tackling the Threat to Democracy from Climate Misinformation
Tackling the Threat to Democracy from Climate Misinformation
Session ID#: 251497
Session Description:
Democratic decision-making is under threat from the spread of misinformation about the causes, consequences and options for tackling climate change. This misinformation is distorting discussion and debate about climate change mitigation and adaptation, particularly in the liberal market economies of the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Canada, but also in otherĀ countries around the world. With global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement now at a critical stage, the risks from misinformation are significant. This session will provide an opportunity to present and discuss the findings of research and analysis describing the promotion of climate misinformation in countries around the world, its consequences, and methods of countering it. This will be an opportunity to bring together social scientists who study climate misinformation, its causes, consequences and how to counter it with Earth scientists and other natural scientists whose work is misrepresented in misinformation.
