One Water – One Health: Harnessing Remote Sensing and Water Systems to Advance Human, Animal, and Environmental Health
Session ID#: 252739
Session Description:
This session focuses on advancing scientific understanding of the interdependencies between water systems and One Health domains—human, animal, and environmental health—through the application of remote sensing and water systems analytics. We invite work that applies Earth observation technologies (e.g., satellite, UAV, in-situ) to monitor water quality, detect ecosystem disruptions, and assess their health implications. Core themes include the role of wildlife (e.g., migratory birds) in the transmission of waterborne and zoonotic diseases (e.g., H5N1); the influence of land use change and watershed practices on pollutant loads and pathogen transport; and the use of AI/ML to identify and trace emerging contaminants such as microplastics. We especially welcome integrative modeling efforts linking environmental monitoring with health surveillance to support predictive risk assessment. By convening researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, this session aims to foster cross-sectoral collaboration and generate actionable insights for protecting water quality and public health in the face of climate-driven stressors.
