System approach and human-water feedbacks: Sustainable Urban-Rural Water and Wastewater Infrastructure in Achieving related Sustainable Development Goals
System approach and human-water feedbacks: Sustainable Urban-Rural Water and Wastewater Infrastructure in Achieving related Sustainable Development Goals
Session ID#: 253048
Session Description:
Millenium Development Goals called for expansion of piped water and flushed toilets; SDGs promote both centralized (CS) and decentralized (DS) water and wastewater systems and call for full coverage with safely managed drinking water and sanitation. During recent centuries expanded centralized water and wastewater infrastructure is costly and faces maintenance and operation issues. Further expansion seems less feasible and requires integration of DS, nature-based solutions (NBS) and AI based decision-support tools (AIDST). Challenges implementing DS are high integration of citizens and responsibility of households. With increased safety and environmental requirements the capacity building among people in operating and maintaining DS is crucial. Systems approach and water-human relationships in providing and integration of coupled CS and DS within urban/rural context, implementation of NBS, AIDST for improved access to drinking water and sanitation services and achieving SDGs 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 at a local/global levels are part of this session.
