Advancing Hydrological and Earth System Insights from GRACE and GRACE-FO Missions
Session ID#: 253725
Session Description:
The GRACE and GRACE Follow-On missions have transformed our ability to monitor large-scale changes in terrestrial water storage (TWS), providing vital insights into the effects of climate variability and human activity on the global water cycle. As the observational record continues to grow, researchers are increasingly equipped to detect long-term hydrological trends, quantify groundwater depletion, monitor the evolution of droughts and floods, and evaluate water system responses to climate extremes and land use change. This session focuses on scientific discoveries enabled by GRACE and GRACE-FO data, and their integration with complementary Earth observations (e.g., SWOT, SMAP, NISAR, Landsat-9, OPERA), in-situ measurements, GNSS observations, and modeling tools. We aim to highlight how mass change data from GRACE missions are advancing our understanding of terrestrial water storage dynamics, hydroclimatic processes, ecosystem interactions, and broader feedbacks within the Earth system.
